Reflections on flint

I was looking up the Ohio state symbols in order to gain a better understanding of this awesome state, and I learned that the official state gemstone is flint. That really caught my attention, so I looked up flint online and found a number of interesting facts about it.

1. It is very hard and doesn’t chip easily, but it is easily shaped

2. It has long been used to ignite fires, and was an essential part of early guns to set the gunpowder off

The spiritual applications of these properties are astounding! Isaiah 50:7 says, “For the Lord GOD will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.”

Also, Ezekiel 3:8-10 says, “Behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads. Like adamant stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not be afraid of them, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.” Moreover He said to me: “Son of man, receive into your heart all My words that I speak to you, and hear with your ears.”

The lesson here is so clear. We want to be easily shaped and formed by God, becoming what we were meant to be, but at the same time strong and hardened against any evil influence.

I also love the part about flint being used to start fires! Just looking at how the universities of Ohio were so influential in the Campus America movement proves that this has already been true. I strongly believe that God will use Ohio to ignite the fires of revival here in the United States.

So, brothers and sisters! Let’s claim this destiny for Ohio! Let’s set our faces as flint and get ready to see people burn for Jesus!
